1995 – ABCD is Founded

When ABCD was founded by 6 provider agencies in 1995, New Jersey served more people with developmental disabilities in state institutions than almost every other state in the country. In the face of this reality, ABCD’s earliest executive developed partnerships with coalitions advocating on housing, job training, health care, and entitlements. He admitted frankly that though most of the people his members served would likely never benefit from these programs, “someday, they will.” Since its inception, ABCD has consistently and intentionally worked on behalf of our providers and the people they serve which includes people with multiple physical, neurological, and developmental disabilities.

2015 – A System Transformed

20 years later, person-centered thinking has transformed the New Jersey system of care. Here is an individual. What do they want to achieve in their life? What can we do to help them achieve it? Tremendous progress has been made through long-term supports and services to enable people to move out of institutional placement and into the community.

2020 – An Alliance for Betterment

Today, ABCD represents social service agencies providing an array of community-based services for individuals with complex developmental disabilities. Our members represent organizations in every corner of New Jersey serving individuals at every stage of life and every level of independence. Because of the great respect ABCD has developed with policymakers and legislators, and because of the strong alliance our agencies have formed with one another, our influence and mutual assistance helps enable our members to continue to do the work they do so well.

Impact

Someday is Here

From Abbot v Burke (the equitable education funding case which also affects students receiving special education services) to New Jersey’s Olmstead Plan: Path to Progress, ABCD and its members have been at the forefront to prepare individuals to be successful, independent, and included and to ensure that the planning, infrastructure, and funding are in place for them to realize their goals.

Our Alliance works every day to open doors for the infants, children, and adults we serve.
